Sunday Brunch: Pandemic Home Makeovers

It’s Sunday again – already. It’s strange how time passes during the pandemic. The weeks go by both fast and slow at the same time – if that makes sense. One thing I do know, with as much time as we’ve been spending at home over the last year, I’m getting awfully tired of these walls! In fact, I may or may not have half-jokingly asked my husband if we could sell our house and buy a new one just so I could have a different set of walls. Of course, we all know that’s not at all practical, so instead, I started thinking about giving our house a makeover.

We bought our house in 2016, and pretty much the only things we’ve done have been putting shelves on the walls and painting two rooms, so it’s beyond time to start giving our home a facelift – and making it feel like a home. So, we’re going to start with the kitchen. These photos are from before we really moved anything in (including our fridge!) But outside of moving the table in and covering counters in things, we’ve done nothing with the room, so this will serve as good as anything as “before” pictures.

While I’d love to do a full kitchen remodel, that’s not in the cards budget-wise. The first thing I want to do is upgrade our range and our microwave. Both are on their last legs and aren’t as efficient as they could be, for as much as I love to cook and bake. We also want to upgrade the dishwasher. The double sink is going to go in exchange for a single, deeper sink. I also want to paint our cabinets white, refinish the counters with a dark marbled look, and paint the backsplash tile a pretty teal. That also means that that burnt red color you see? That’s going too. I’m thinking a light shade of gray will be nice and really brighten the room. I really want to modernize the look of our house – so all the oak trim you see will become the same white as the cabinets. We’ve already gotten rid of those blinds. So I’ll make some curtains to hang in their place.

Finding Home Makeover Inspiration

I don’t want to stop with the kitchen, next on the list will be our master bathroom and master bedroom, then the kids’ bathroom, then our family room. We will see how far we get this year, meanwhile, I’m always on the lookout for home makeover inspiration!

Jonathan Knight (yes, THAT Jonathan Knight) has a home makeover show coming out on HGTV. Even though we’re not really into the whole farmhouse style, there are elements of it I like and, I mean, watching Jonathan go step-by-step through a home makeover seems pretty novel to me.

We have a lot of family photos. I like this post from Centsational Style, “10 Art Arrangements for Your Staircase Wall Space.” There are some cute ideas for how to arrange the photos on your staircase wall.

One of our pain points in our master bathroom is the vanity. It just doesn’t have enough drawers, the faucets are showing their age, and the tile has yellowed. I’ve been thinking about replacing it with a white vanity with marbled top like the ones featured in Maison de Pax’s blog post.

As with the kitchen, I want to paint the master bedroom and bath some shades of gray. “9 Best Gray Paint Colors for Your Bedroom” by Ashley Knierim at The Spruce has a lot of inspiration for that project.

Our half bath hasn’t really been painted or decorated or anything, so it’s also on my list. I really like some of the ideas in “20 Half-Bathroom Ideas – Decor Ideas for Small Spaces” by Carmen Collins at Country Living – particularly the idea of using bold colors and wallpaper with white fixtures to make an impression.

Have you felt the need for a home makeover? What area are you starting with?
