When we think of Valentine’s Day, what do we picture? Usually, the day is made up of red roses, chocolates, and gifts, ending with a romantic dinner at the nicest restaurant in town. And that might’ve been true a few years ago, but recently there has been a casual trend making its way into the most romantic holiday of the year. More people than ever before are opting to stay home on Valentine’s Day, either cooking for their significant other or ordering from their favorite take out spot. And the trend doesn’t just stop there, as many consumers are even ordering a lot of wine for delivery late into the night to help keep the romance flowing.
Postmates, the leader in food delivery services, has an inside look at this new trend and what they’ve found is actually pretty surprising. And while wine may not be the top choice of the night, it did manage to snag the number 2 spot. Keep reading to see if your favorite brand made the cut.
31% of the total alcohol orders placed via Postmates on Valentine’s Day last year were for wine and champagne. And while beer seemed to reign supreme last year, it’s worth noting that consumers only spent 10% more on beer, proving the value in consumer’s favorite bottles of wine. They may have placed fewer orders, but that’s only because they know one or two higher-priced bottles are worth the expense compared to several cheaper brands. Interested in the top wines of the evening? Here is Postmates’ breakdown:
- Sauvignon Blanc, White Zinfandel and Chardonnay were the most popular wines for Valentine’s Day 2019.
- Top wine brands across the nation included Oyster Bay, Barefoot, Yellow Tail and Matthew Fritz.
- The fanciest wine orders of the night included Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon, Chandon Rose Napa and Reckless Love Red Blend, whose bottles all start at $25 and up.
- North Carolina residents ordered the most wine for delivery on Valentine’s Day in the entire country.
- They were particularly obsessed with the wine brands Matthew Fritz and Cupcake, ordering a variety from those brands throughout the night.
- The most popular wine in North Carolina was Cabernet Sauvignon, as 50% of the orders placed that night were for bottles of cab from several different brands.
While you may have a different brand in mind than the rest of the nation for this upcoming holiday, there is no doubt that the trend of staying in on Valentine’s Day is growing fast. And it’s not hard to see why – we’d much rather be curled up with our significant other and a glass of red than face the crowds. But no matter what you decided to do on Valentine’s Day, take time to remember what’s really important, and enjoy another glass of wine while you’re at it!
