Today and tomorrow, I’m on the Breaking Ground Blog Tour. Be sure you read to the end for a cool giveaway. For today’s stop on the tour, I made my first coat. I was pretty indecisive about what coat I wanted to make. I wound up deciding to use some Italian tweed I had in my stash that was originally from Mood, and I chose the Seamwork Jill Coatigan. Initially, I was a bit overly ambitious, and I think this was a good fit for me to do. On my adventure of making the coat, I managed to somehow break the lever for my brand new coverstitch’s presser foot…I made it work, though, but now, I suppose it’s time for it to go into the spa.
Teddy coats are really popular right now, so I wanted to do something similar – but I didn’t want to work with faux fur. I just got my sewing room in something that resembles order, and just wasn’t feeling pulling the fur up from everywhere, but perhaps in the future I’ll do that. I think it would be fun. I wanted the shape of one of the coats though, and I thought this tweed would work well.
ABOUT THE PATTERN
I have a subscription to Seamwork Magazine, and so I’ve been stashing up a ton of their patterns for a while. The Jill Coatigan is one of them. It’s a good beginner-intermediate pattern. There’s a shawl collar and a kick pleat, and outside of that it’s pretty basic. Oh! And pockets, but I chose not to do the pockets on this because I thought they’d be too bulky in this fabric. It’s unlined, so it makes it a fairly quick sew as far as coats go.
ABOUT THE FABRIC
I used this blue Italian wool tweed I picked up about five years ago when we were living in California still. I think I got it on sale from Mood, but I don’t see it available on their site anymore. It’s when they had a “fabric of the week.” It’s a medium weight, and has nice drape. I really like how it sewed up, and it’s a color that goes well with a lot of what I have in my closet right now.
MY COAT
It was actually a lot of fun to sew this up, and maybe I’ll try it in a plush fabric next time. I will size up next time. I made the XL, and I think I would have benefitted in the arms from the 2X.
